That is a good question Keith. I just became an owner of a boat with a keyless digital igntion system this year and hope I do not have similar issues. My back-up would have to be the 9.9 kicker or the electric on the bow.but not everyone will have this I realize. In my view, this is not really an issue of having a 'back-up starting system'.but it is an issue of starting system reliability. If you had a problem with a mechanical keyed system you really have the same problem.

I think you raise a good question in the reliability of keyless digital systems. It is my hope that the keyless system is at least equally reliable to keyed/mechanical ignition, othwerwise what purpose does it serve (I would argue it is not security.if I take a key out you can not start my boat by guessing my code!). I have not had enough experience with the digital keyless system to make a fair comparison vs.

Mechanical/keyed systems, but maybe others that have can comment or share their experiences.
