A Tiny Mouse With a Big Gift In Dick King-Smith's A Mouse Called Wolf, Wolfgang Amadeus Mouse is the smallest of thirteen Mouse children, and that is why his mother gives him a grand name. But he always loses at his siblings' games and they tease him badly, giving him the nickname 'Wolf.' The other mice tease Wolfgang by calling him Wolf, but he actually likes the nickname. Wolf is happy when the other Mouse children leave the nest. His mother, Mary, adores him, and he spends his mornings and evenings enjoying the piano playing of Mrs. Honeybee, the lady of the house. He likes it so much that he soon discovers he has a surprising gift: he can sing!
Wolf Makes a Friend Wolf's singing quickly draws the attention of the house cat. While trying to get away, Wolf and Mary end up stuck inside the piano! The good news is that the cat's tail gets pinched in the process, making him forever after afraid of mice. The bad news is that Wolf and Mary can't get out! Wolf and Mary become trapped when the top to the piano closes behind them as they run from the cat. To calm his mother's fears, Wolf breaks into song - one had learned from Mrs. It is so beautiful, loud, and clear that Mrs.
Honeybee hears. She creeps into the living room, lifts the top of the piano, and discovers the singing mouse! The mice escape to their mouse hole, but Mrs. Honeybee sits down at the piano hoping to teach Wolf a new song. And so their friendship begins. Honeybee plays new songs for Wolf to learn, luring him up to the piano with a small piece of chocolate for him and his mother to enjoy.
Honeybee is a lonely widow, and she likes having this new friend. Although they can't communicate it to one another, each wishes that one day Mrs. Honeybee could accompany Wolf on the piano while he sings. Wolf to the Rescue One morning Mrs. Honeybee fails to report to her piano as usual.
Wolf, who has grown fond of their sessions, becomes worried and soon discovers that she has fallen in her bedroom and broken her ankle. Honeybee is in trouble! He spots a police man outside and begins to sing Help by the Beatles.
The police man hears Wolf through the open window and is able to help Mrs. Wolf the Composer With Mrs. Honeybee recovering in the hospital for a few days, Wolf has no one to teach him new songs. This makes him sad, but then he decides to compose, or write, his own song. While sitting by the window in Mrs. Honeybee's bedroom, Wolf becomes inspired by the birds flying around outside. He ends up composing the most beautiful piece of music his mother has ever heard, and when Mrs.
Honeybee returns home he astonishes her as well with his original piece. She says it sounds like Mozart and names him Wolfgang Amadeus Mouse (Wolf for short). Little did she know, that was his name all along! Lesson Summary Wolf is the smallest of the thirteen Mouse children, but his mother adores him, so she gives him a great big name: Wolfgang Amadeus Mouse. He discovers he has a beautiful singing voice and forges an unlikely friendship with a widow named Mrs.
